Background: While there is a wikia page available, it is incomplete. However, since I've mentioned it, I'll link it here before providing some extended Background History on Adrien Agreste.
Note: Given "Miraculous Ladybug"'s episodic nature, this history is mainly from snippets we gain from episodes, webisodes, and the two-part "Origins" episode as nothing significant concerning plot progression happens until about the last episode, "Volpina". Adrien's personal progression and personality to develop in each episode instead which will be discussed in the Personality section.
The only son born to fashion mogul Gabriel Agreste and his wife, Adrien has lived the typical life of privilege many expect a child in his position would. For personal reasons, his parents kept him at home where he was homeschooled by various tutors and was only ever given social contact with one other child his age - the Mayor's daughter, Chloé Bourgeois. Still, he never expresses issue with this, often having the company of his parents, especially that of his mother. For years, things were well until Adrien's mother disappears without explanation. Whether she left, or if there are other forces playing, Adrien doesn't know. However, what he does know is that, following his mother's disappearance, his father proceeds to change, grow increasingly cold and distant from him. Even offering to personally model for his father's line doesn't get the attention now lacking in Adrien's life; instead, expectations and constant disappointment begins to overtake the once harmonious relationship the Agreste father and son had.
Growing tired of his life abruptly absent of social interaction and love, Adrien makes multiple appeals to his father to attend public schooling only to constantly be denied and reminded again how dangerous the world outside is. Not that being told stops Adrien from wanting to go as he instead proceeds to sneaking out of his home and running to attend the nearby Collège Françoise Dupont on the first day. Though he makes it to the entrance, his father's secretary Nathalie and his bodyguard simply named the Gorilla manage to arrive to stop him. Though he still has the opportunity to run into the school, he doesn't. Instead, Adrien notices an older man has fallen nearby and requires assistance getting back to his feet so, passing up escaping his father's employees, Adrien helps the old man up before becoming pliant and heading home to be put under supervision for the remainder of the day...
... or so he thought. Little did he know, but helping that old man at school was going to trigger a change.
Upon arriving home and getting through another history lesson, he's again lectured by his father before running off to his room, just in time for the first akuma* attack of the series by the name of Stoneheart. Running back to his room to watch the developing story, Adrien notices a dark box with an ancient red insignia painted on the lid somehow sitting at his table. Upon opening it, a green light momentarily blinds him before coalescing into the shape of a small floating black cat. This tiny entity is a kwami named Plagg and by wearing the Miraculous** ring stored inside the box, Plagg would grant the powers of destruction to the wearer. And now that it has been given to Adrien, it's his task to stop the akuma. Though Adrien is excited at the possibility of being a hero, he's locked in his house - but Plagg doesn't mind encouraging the teen to break the rules.
Transforming, Adrien doesn't waste time slipping out to try getting the hang of his abilities only to immediately have a girl in a red-and-black suit crash into him. Strung together by her weapon (a yo-yo) and hanging upside down for a second, he quickly concludes she must be his partner Plagg told him about and introduces himself as Chat Noir. Unlike his still nervous partner, Adrien's quick to track down and confront Stoneheart - too quick though because he doesn't know how to properly use his superpower 'Cataclysm' and ends up requiring assistance from his partner to get the job done. They succeed in releasing the akuma; unfortunately, they let the akuma go where it proceeds to multiply and turn other people into monsters. Adrien's ready and willing to head out and stop the mass monster spread, but Plagg tells him of the Cat Miraculous's limits: only his partner wielding the Ladybug Miraculous can purify the akuma.
Without knowing where his partner was, Adrien focuses on other things: mainly, trying to go to school again. In his second attempt, he succeeds in getting to class, but swiftly finds himself garnering cold shoulders and odd looks for apparently being friends with Chloé. He even gains the ire of Marinette Dupain-Cheng after Chloé plants gum on the girl's chair and she quickly assumes Adrien is in on the prank. He doesn't even have a chance to explain himself, but he does gain a friend in the form of his deskmate Nino after explaining he couldn't just throw his oldest friend under the bus.
The day continues on rather normally until Stoneheart makes his reappearance. Adrien manages to slip away and transforms once again into Chat Noir with hopes of his partner, Ladybug, showing up while he holds off Stoneheart and his army. For a while, it seems like Ladybug is not going to arrive and he ends up captured, but she does appear and saves him in the nick of time. Together, they head to the Eiffel Tower to confront Stoneheart who turns out to have a message for them and Paris from the person controlling him (in the form of a multitude of akuma): first, that the man behind this attack is Hawkmoth (Papillion in French) and second, the two should give up the Ladybug and Cat Miraculous to him. Of course they don't relinquish them and Chat Noir watches in love struck amazement as Ladybug captures every akuma with the vow of her and Chat Noir protecting the city before releasing the akuma all completely purified. With their powers combine, they put an end to Stoneheart on the Eiffel Tower and Ladybug restores Paris to its non-destroyed state.
Following successful heroism, Adrien returns to school only to have Marinette stiff his attempts at being friendly. Dejected, he sits down next to Nino who tells the boy he should try explaining himself again to Marinette. By some dumb luck, it begins raining and Adrien catches Marinette waiting for the worst to pass before walking home. He takes the chance to explain to Marinette that he was attempting to remove the gum from her chair when she walked in that day and that he didn't know how to explain himself since it's his first time going to school and interacting with more people his age. To show his sincerity, he gives her his umbrella, laughing when it suddenly closes on her, but smiling because she's forgiven him. He heads home, pleased to have made another new friend.
And that is the beginning of Adrien becoming the superhero Chat Noir and the beginning of his infatuation for Ladybug... who's also Marinette Dupain-Cheng, but he doesn't know. There's still much for him to learn especially since his father's mysteriously in possession of a book depicting all the Miraculous.
*Akuma - This is a little confusing, but simply put, akuma are butterflies that have been corrupted and are sent out to those experiencing negative emotions. By flying into and possessing an object on said individual, Hawkmoth will communicate with them and - if they agree - will be turned into a supervillain. Supervillain appearances vary with most of them being humanoid still, but some have been turned into actual monsters like Stoneheart.
**Miraculous - Magical jewelry that, upon being worn, allows the wearer to interact with the kwami connected to them (kwami will be explained below) and also wield their powers by transforming them. Each Miraculous is animal-themed but the strongest of all are said to be the Ladybug Miraculous earrings and the Black Cat Miraculous ring.
Personality: Charismatic with little effort and kind to a fault, Adrien is a fairly innocent and reserved kid whose lack of social interactions make it difficult for him to express himself. That, compounded with the fact that he has a public appearance his father forces him to maintain, and here's a boy that must also now monitor his own behavior around people. He always does his best to control himself around his peers and generally obeys rules if/when they're given. If something does make him react, he bottles it up as he has done a number of times with his sadness like in "The Bubbler" when he's unable to have a birthday party, and frustration like in "A Christmas Special" when his father doesn't seem to want to spend Christmas with him. He doesn't vent or express his feelings until he's visibly out of the public's eye, but there are instances where his emotions will override his collected facade such as the moment where he actually tells his father in "Simon Says" to hide before the akuma comes only to be reprimanded for being 'overly emotional'. Steadily, he's beginning to open up to others, but only to those who he considers himself close to.
It's why, when Adrien transforms into Chat Noir, their personalities can appear vastly different. Without the need to worry about his public appearance as Adrien Agreste thanks to the mask, Chat Noir is boisterous, outgoing, and not afraid to speak his mind. He's cocky and confident, and generally more optimistic prowling around in his superhero persona, enjoying cat-themed jokes and puns much to the bother of his partner. Speaking of his partner Ladybug, Chat Noir lavishes getting her attention, and while he doesn't mind getting other people's similarly through his more outrageous actions and behavior, he seeks her the most. Adrien is outright in love with the girl in the Ladybug mask - who is Marinette -
but not that she knows this because of Superhero Rule No. One: the heroes cannot know each other's identity. However, a downside to Chat Noir's more open behavior, Adrien can become reckless or act out during fits of emotion more easily, much like the time his jealousy resulted in him making an akuma victim in "Copycat".
Despite Chat Noir's overbearing actions, Adrien's only imitating things he's seem from movies, anime, and manga according to Word of God due to again his sheltered upbringing. He's doing his best to be a lovable, well-meaning and comedic superhero to cover up his vulnerabilities, but this act doesn't diminish his real traits.
As Adrien or as Chat Noir, he remains kind and concerned for the well-being of others rather than himself, and he knows when to get serious in a confrontation. Adrien takes his position as the Cat Miraculous User seriously enough that he knows if he must sacrifice himself to protect his partner, he will do so without thought much as he has in "Timebreaker" and "Dark Cupid". There's also no question that he's supportive to those he cares about, even providing Ladybug enough confidence to continue being a hero after their first botched battle in the "Origins" episodes. It's thematic to the show that Adrien serves as the Yin to Marinette's Yang; his reserved and calmer nature helping him ground his partner in those few moments where she may act out herself. After all, one of them needs to figure out the plan of action in battle... and it's not him really.
No matter what happens, Adrien's ready and willing to protect Paris from Hawkmoth.
Abilities: Adrien's abilities as a normal civilian are numerous. Besides aforementioned modeling he does, he's trained in fencing and karate, winning numerous competitions and reaching the rank of black belt respectively. He also participates in other physical sporting activities like basketball and lacrosse, but only is lacrosse actually with the school team. As for other abilities outside of sports, Adrien knows how to play the piano and is fluent in Chinese that he can communicate with Marinette's Great Uncle without trouble.
When donning the suit and becoming Chat Noir, his agility, speed, and strength increase immensely. Unique to the Cat Miraculous, he also gains night vision, claws, heightened hearing, a sharpened sense of smell, and other various cat-like abilities such as comfortably running on all fours. The suit itself is impervious and makes him resilient to most damage, but still leaves him vulnerable to pain. In regards to combat, the signature weapon that comes with the suit is a silver baton capable of deflecting attacks, extending to incredible lengths for fighting or vaulting across Paris, and duplicating themselves to be wielded in both hands. Spinning the singular baton fast enough can also temporarily provide a shield and slow his descent should Adrien find himself falling.
Presently, Adrien only has one magical ability which is the signature of the Cat Miraculous: Cataclysm. By calling upon this power and summoning dark energy into his hand, Adrien becomes capable of 'destroying' anything*. From simply causing electronics to malfunction to destroying a pocket dimension (see episode: "Pixelator"), Cataclysm affects any and all objects negatively, but only one or a few related objects depending on how quickly Adrien can reach them. After Cataclysm's use, Adrien has five minutes before he will lose his transformation (each minute marked by losing a glowing paw on his ring) and need to refuel his kwami, Plagg. Fortunately, objects lost to Cataclysm can be restored by Ladybug's ability 'Miraculous Ladybug'.
* = Cataclysm has yet to have been used on a living creature; therefore, the results are unknown.
Note: What Cataclysm can destroy will be limited to small to medium-scale objects. If destroying an item another character has, please make sure to ask permission from the other player first.
Alignment: Elios. While Adrien mostly experiences various levels of disappointment during his teenage life at present, he's someone that - once he loves, he loves. It's his love for his father that keeps him trying to please him, love for his friends that makes him do all he can for them, and love for Ladybug that really keeps him fighting. Maybe one day, his love will properly be acknowledged.
Other: For one thing, when Adrien is transformed into Chat Noir, he's not recognized as Adrien. Miraculous magic keeps his identity a secret ala Clark Kent.
Speaking of transforming into Chat Noir, Adrien is also going to bring around Plagg, his kwami. In the universe of Miraculous, a kwami is a Quantic God that comes into existence when an abstract idea, thought, or emotion comes into existence. As such, when the universe was born, Tikki - the kwami of creation - came into existence where her opposite, Plagg - the kwami of destruction - would likely have appeared shortly after.
Small at ten centimeters in height, bearing a cat appearance and quite fairy-like with his ability to fly, he would be invisible were it not for the Miraculous Ring. Crafted thousands of years after his emergence along with the other Miraculous jewels, it allows him to interact with humans and bestow his destructive powers to them. As such, when no one bears the ring, Plagg becomes dormant, inhabiting the ring which takes a signature black band appearance with a green paw adorning the face. When awakened, Plagg's ring becomes silver when his wielder is not transformed, but takes on the same black appearance when the user transforms - only this time, the paw serving as a timer when his powers have been expended. When time runs out, Plagg is ejected from the ring and must be fed in order to restore his energy and allow the transformation to occur again.
Though Plagg is likely thousands of years old, he doesn't act like it. He's aloof and doesn't typically help Adrien in the conventional way of providing life-changing advice or moral support like his counterpart Tikki would. Instead, his nature contradicts and pokes at Adrien's more uptight lifestyle, pushing the kid to break the rules and live a little which is exactly what the kid needs. When he does call Adrien out as actual misbehavior like when his jealousy resulted in Copycat, it's often in a sardonic manner. Despite that, Plagg does express care and concern when Adrien has his low points like providing a quiet moment while Adrien looks at photographs of him and his mother. Looking after him is Plagg's number one priority... well, it's tied with his love for Camembert, but close enough.
Plagg can be categorized as a 'sidekick' according to the rules. There's enough that he could be his own character, but since his existence and powers are tied to the ring - which is an item Adrien possesses - he'll be sticking to Adrien's side.
General Sample: Adrien on the November TDM
Emotion Sample: "Woooah..."
Adrien's eyes gleam as he looks up and around at the buildings that both tower and surround him, smiling wide at the vastness of it all.
"This is just like-"
"Don't say it!" Plagg warns from inside his shirt collar, Adrien all but aware of the scowl his little kwami is fixing him with... but honestly, the opportunity is too good to pass up.
"-one of my Japanese Anime," he finishes with a chuckle, definitely ignoring the pointed glare coming from Plagg. There had been such a flurry of movement earlier between getting the crystal around his neck to arriving in the city that he hadn't really looked before, but now - now he was in the thick of it. It's crowded much like Paris, but it's somehow almost magically packed. Many of the structures shouldn't work, but they are and they're everywhere, and he wants to have a ride on that airship going by!
"So cool!"
So many people, so many sounds, so many scents and smoke stacks and steampunk, he couldn't believe his eyes. It makes him even less away of the fact he might be glowing - literally - with a few sparkles fluttering off him physically. His glow and gleam even catches the eye of several stands and people walking by who immediately shield their eyes while trying to go about their business, but there are a few sent on a collision with support beams and other people trying to get by. Plagg himself squints and paws Adrien's neck firmly.
"Hey, hey! Adrien, can it with the light show!"
"Huh? What light...? Where'd this glitter come from?"
Eyebrow rising, whatever brightness coming from him dies down as he brushes his arm, watching the glitter - the sparkles - come off and land on the ground. Tilting his head, he doesn't get it. "That's not glitter... What is that?"
Questions: I definitely know Cataclysm may to be reduced in strength so if that is the case, I'm willing to negotiate something. Also, I use
