Character
Character Name: Adrien Agreste aka Chat Noir
Canon: Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir
Canon Point: End of Season One
Type: Canon
Age: ~15 (no official age is given, but he's in collège which is French secondary school where students are generally age 11-15. One of his classmates turned 15 while he 'celebrated' his birthday earlier during the season)

History/Key Points:
The only child to famous French Fashion Design Gabriel Agreste, Adrien lives a comfortable life of wealth and opportunity. Of course, that's an absolute lie. While he may have everything in the way of material goods and support by simply asking for so much, he doesn't really care for it.

In his childhood, the Agreste family was a happy and healthy unit. However, for reasons unexplained, his mother disappeared. As a result, his father proceeded to bury himself within work, growing distant from his son, and limiting contact with him. Not only that, but Gabriel quickly restricted the boy from going out. Unable to leave without escort from his bodyguard, Adrien's life was put on a strict schedule. Home schooling sessions, modeling for the Agreste line at his father's request, his schedule regularly remained full to meticulously groom him into the 'perfect' son. Not that Adrien could complain in the beginning. Too cowed by the change in family dynamics, the young boy did everything at his father's request in hopes of keeping this strained connection somehow.

When he became a teenager, he began to yearn for a chance to experience a normal teenage life instead of being cooped up in his house any longer. Due to this desire, Adrien proceeded to attempt on multiple occasions to escape his sheltered life, and actually attend a normal school, and maybe even make friends with people his age. Unfortunately, each attempt was thwarted, and he was dragged back home to be lectured for his disobedience.

Until one day, while attempting to go to school once more, Adrien - having been caught by his father's secretary and bodyguard - assisted a fallen old man back to his feet before permitting himself to be taken back home. Such a small action would soon grant him a chance at freedom in the form of a silver ring called a Miraculous, and the mysterious black cat kwami named Plagg. It's really a calling Adrien was all too eager to accept; so much so that he doesn't even listen to Plagg's entire explanation of the life in store for him once he put on the ring, and activated its magic.

Transformation complete, Adrien now becomes the self-titled Chat Noir, the cat-earred, black leather clad superhero with the powers over Destruction. Together with his partner, Ladybug, he helps to stop akuma possessions across Paris, and search for their enemy, Hawkmoth.

Personality: For most people, it's difficult to see Adrien and Chat Noir as the same person. The personality each displays is the polar opposite with Adrien being polite and soft-spoken, and Chat Noir being cocky and boisterous with both sides rarely crossing into the other. However, each half is still one boy; one boy who - due to circumstance - is stuck dividing himself between both appearances.

Without the mask, Adrien is an Agreste. He has an appearance to maintain to the public, and is expected to behave as to not slander his family. He's charismatic, friendly, encouraging, but is almost a push over, too. Because of his strict family life, he has to restrain his emotional response to everything. Sure, emotions like frustration and loneliness tend to get through, but Adrien is generally careful when expressing himself in public, saving outbursts and moments of whimsy to the confines of his room. In "Simonsayz", his father reprimands and sends him to his room for becoming emotional even though the reason Adrien was becoming emotional was out of concern for his father's well-being. Most of the reason Adrien behaves so well is due to his father, and trying to make him happy while almost entirely ignoring himself.

Transformed as Chat Noir, Adrien is no longer confined to being the perfect son. Chat Noir is his escape, allowing him to be mischievous, irrational, and do whatever he feels like which is mostly joking around with many cat-related puns. He's much more expressive, and may even sometimes forget what personal space is. Most of his attention as his superhero persona goes towards Ladybug whom he constantly tries to impress when they're not dealing with an akuma, but he will wise up when the going gets tough. Between the duo, he's the offensive player, providing the distraction while his partner comes up with a plan to defeat villain of the day as well as absorbing hits since he's incapable of purifying akumas, a trait which is almost self-destructive (seriously, he got wiped from existence protecting Ladybug).

Though both sides display different personalities, there are points where they bleed together. With or without his mask, Adrien still displays a surprising amount of kindness and loyalty even after his years isolated, and tries to keep his loneliness contained. He tends to really shine when he's around his partner, Ladybug. Chat Noir and Ladybug serve as Yin and Yang with Adrien symbolizing Yin heavily to Marinette's Yang. His reserved nature helps him call out Marinette when/if she begins acting in error and calm her down, but he also offers encouragement when she feels upset, or unsure of herself. He's actually the reason why Marinette manages to carry on as Ladybug when they originally received their Miraculous powers, and didn't manage to cleanse their first akuma. As well, his true feats of determination and trust come during their fights as he mainly sticks to Ladybug's plan of attack no matter what it ends up being. Of course, he doesn't know who the girl is behind the mask, but he's prepared to fight anytime anywhere with her to protect Paris.

Gem: Cat's Eye aka Chrysoberyl - Get it? Cat's Eye. But no, being serious, this gem is located on the palm of his right hand - the hand that bears his Miraculous ring - in the shape of a paw print. Discipline and self-control are the lead qualities of this gem, and Adrien displays both out of the suit, and then again in the suit. His power is that of destruction and bad luck, two forces that could quickly end in disaster depending on the wielder. While he doesn't make the plans, he is very careful using his powers, supporting Ladybug through her plans, and also acting as the voice of reason when she isn't.

Power Considerations:
  • Feline Physiology - Flexible as a feline, this power grants many of the advantages a cat has such as speed, durability, sight, hearing, and smell. Unfortunately, he gains feline habits as well including the urge to get in boxes, reacting around silvervine and catnip, and even chasing laser pointers. Please don't point a spray bottle at him.

  • Curse Manipulation - Channeling the energies of misfortune into his gem, he can then utilize that energy towards various uses, but mainly for the destruction of any one thing he touches. It can also be used to augment his speed, strength, or endurance. However, an overabundance or overuse can drain him physically, mentally, and emotionally. Also, if he doesn't redirect the misfortune before gaining too much, it can spill into another. Unlike Luck Absorption, this power has to be actively used early on, using something akin to Cataclysm in order to draw the energy in and shape it from there.

  • Luck Absorption - By absorbing any luck around him, he is provided more strength, stamina, speed, and endurance. Unfortunately, it's not at his control which one he takes (he's supposed to absorb bad luck), or how much he takes from people around him quickly leading to him taking too much and randomly releasing it back onto unsuspecting individuals. Unlike Curse Manipulation, this power is passive early on, and has less side effects on him while having more effects on his surroundings. Just a real black cat crossing someone's path.

Extra: When he transforms into Chat Noir, he's not recognized due in part to the Miraculous magic. It's Clark Kent-ing to the extreme.
