History: On an undisclosed date, Adrien Agreste was born to fashion designer Gabriel Agreste and his wife, actress Emilie Agreste in Paris, France. As the only child of two rather famous individuals, they decided to raise him behind closed doors to protect him from the world. Home schooled and tutored for a majority of his life, and only being allowed to befriend the mayor's daughter, Chloé Bourgeois, Adrien actually did not object too much to this lifestyle thanks to the presence of his parents; more importantly, his mother.

However, things would not remain that way forever.

For reasons unknown, Emilie Agreste disappeared and in response, Gabriel Agreste began to distance himself from his son. It's mentioned in a later episode "Simon Says" that Adrien got many of his mother's traits from her appearance to her emotions, both notable traits which likely lead to his father more or less distancing himself. Since Adrien was already grieving over the disappears of his mother, he didn't at first notice the growing distance between himself and his father. With months of continued absences, cancelled plans, growing list of restrictions and general lack of positive encouragement, Adrien began to want something more: To attend public school like everyone else, to begin a normal teenage social life. After all, a life of being sheltered and having one friend who stopped visiting (or was barred from at some point) was not making his forced solitude bearable. Of course, upon asking his father for permission the answer was no, but that wasn't going to stop Adrien. Planning for the first day, he managed to escape his heavily monitored manor and raced towards school.

Before he could attend the first day though, his father's secretary and hired bodyguard managed to catch up. Adrien would have eluded them were it not for a chance encounter with an old man fallen on the sidewalk, being ignored by ongoing foot traffic. With no one else assisting him, Adrien chose to help the guy out, getting to his feet and returning his cane. He might've been forced home afterwards, but what Adrien didn't know was helping that old man would change his life forever.

After being reprimanded by his father for his actions and returning to his room, it wouldn't be long before Adrien discovered a bizarre jewelry box sitting on his coffee table. Inside that box was a black ring; and inside that black ring was a quantic god, or Kwami, named Plagg. Bound to the ring, Plagg can transform the wearer into a being who can wield his powers of destruction by way of a pretty simple phrase. Adrien didn't hesitate to transform, even with the added stipulation that he would be fighting supervillains that have only recently begun to appear all over Paris. It was his chance for freedom, and getting to be a hero? How could he say no to that?

Accepting the mantle of Chat Noir for the first time, Adrien soon encountered his partner and eventual love interest, Ladybug. While she lacked confidence in this initial encounter, he made up with too much confidence, charging recklessly ahead into the battle against their first supervillain, Stoneheart. Despite lacking a plan, his actions at least spurred his partner into coming to his aid, upon which they managed to stop Stoneheart's rampage... although, not really.

Something they neglected to do was capture the akuma - that is, a butterfly that was released by the actual villain Hawkmoth and corrupted by dark energy. Hawkmoth, as it's discovered in the episode "Volpina", was meant to be a superhero just like Ladybug and Chat Noir. However, the brooch which transforms its wearer into a hero went missing years ago, but wound up in the wrong hands. With the corrupted power to turn people exhibiting strong negative emotions into his villainous champions, Hawkmoth aims to get the Ladybug's earrings and Chat Noir's ring in order to obtain ultimate power for a yet to be disclosed reason. To Adrien's dismay, Chat Noir is unable to purify akuma which leaves the task up to Ladybug with her powers of Creation, but following the failure of catching Stoneheart's akuma and it multiplying to possess other citizens before Stoneheart's reemergence, she disappeared.

Fortunately, she doesn't manage to stay gone too long. Though Stoneheart amasses an army and Hawkmoth made his first public appearance to attempt to strike a deal, Chat Noir provided a much needed boost to Ladybug's confidence. With her finally taking a bold step forward, she publicly declared that she and Chat Noir would, from there on forward, protect Paris and elsewhere from Hawkmoth's akumas and eventually take back his brooch. Together, they stop Stoneheart and capture his akuma, resulting in the day being saved.

Not only that, but later, Adrien would manage to make up with Marinette, a classmate that would soon become a dear friend and unknown love interest. Their first meeting wasn't the best: When he attempted to remove chewed gum placed on Marinette's seat by Chloe, he was caught. She assumed the worst, that he was in on the cruel prank set in motion by the mayor's daughter, and he was given no chance to explain himself. The sunny day following Stoneheart's purification gives way to rain though, and Marinette lingered at the school entrance until the storm lightened up. Adrien took that as a much needed opportunity to speak to her again, explaining how he was trying to remove the gum, that he's still learning how to make friends and make up with people, and then, he gives her his umbrella.

Following the rise of the heroes in "Origins", Adrien's life is shown to have changed for the better and worse. While he can now freely attend school and make friends, many restrictions and old activities such as fencing, modeling, and Chinese still remain on his schedule. Not only that, but the relationship between father and son further divide as Gabriel not only misses out on celebrating his son's 14th birthday, but fails to get him a gift. The instance isn't an isolated moment either as Gabriel denies Adrien from having a party at all and doesn't even attempt to show up for Career Day when it comes around at school. There are moments though, like in "Simons Says" and the "Christmas Special", that Adrien is shown his father's love, but it's concerning how often Gabriel reminds his son that everything he does is for his safety.

It's not like his father's a villain or anything... right?

Personality: If there's anything jumps out about Adrien immediately, it's how surprisingly kind he especially considering his background and who he's surrounded by; mainly a father who shut himself off from anything that's not work. A situation like that might have someone else actively lashing out, and while Adrien is frustrated by his circumstances and does break out on a few occasions, he also wants to reach out and reconnect to his father. Honestly, it's love for his remaining family member that keeps him willing to respect his orders most of the time.

Further, Adrien is a selfless individual, both offering to model for his father in exchange for sacrificing more of his already limited free time and missing out on going to school to help an old man back to his feet. It even reaches a level of concerning with how many times he'll defend Ladybug in battle with his body as a literal shield. He stands in contrast to the mayor's daughter, Chloé, who's in a similar situation with her mother leaving her father behind, but becoming more vain and selfish to forget about her problems.

However, while Adrien is a kind and selfless individual, he's also withdrawn and often feels trapped. The reality is he's a very emotional person much like his mother according to Gabriel, but most of his emotions are to be reserved because he's an Agreste. He's not allowed to get mad or misbehave in any way before others that might reflect poorly on his father and his empire. This generally means that many of Adrien's bottled emotions are unleashed when he's Chat Noir, and even that's after he's not trying to act like a superhero from an anime or comic. For example, his jealousy gets the best of him in the episode "Copycat" where he lies to the villain of the day about Ladybug and himself being in an actual relationship in order to deter admiration for the heroine.

Another result of his being withdrawn is certain degrees of social awkwardness. Since he must behave as Adrien, he ends up being dragged around, walked over, or compliant to people like Lila Rossi in the episode "Volpina" and aforementioned Chloé who he only begins to stand up to in few and far between cases. Also, while he makes a few complaints about his father and schedule here and there to new friends Nino, Alya, and Marinette, Adrien doesn't go in-depth or detail what might be really troubling him except with Plagg.

It's only been a little over a year since his mother disappeared, but it's apparent how she was the heart of the household. Her void is something that Adrien desperately wants filled, but doesn't know how to and doesn't want to bother anyone else with. Instead, he'll keep on smiling and try to fill the emptiness by escaping as Chat Noir until he can figure something out.
